The Incredible Egg Observation
July 29, 2009
Day One
We were given an ordinary chicken egg to observe. These were my observations of the outside of the egg: white, dimples, eliptical, about 5.4 cm long with a 14 cm circumference taken in the middle, it wouldn’t stand on its end but it rolled, and something sloshed in the inside. We were then told to open the egg. These are my observations of the inside of the egg: (1) a film is on the inside of the shell with an wir pocket, (2) the transparent yellow circle has a diameter of about 4.2 cm, (3) the yellow appears to have more mass than the translucent liquid, (4) the liquid spreads to take the shape of the plate, (5) a white strand appears to be attached to the yellow, and (6) a clump of clear jelly appears to be attached to the yellow. At this point, were made a hypothesis about what the outside and inside of the egg looked like by making a drawing. Afterward we compared it to the actual diagram.

Observing the Egg
I have done observation versus inference activities with various types of foam with my students. This activities is less complicated. I’m eager to try it this year. Has anyone tried this or others like it?
